One of the directions of scientific research of the Institute of Biotechnology of the NAS KR is the monitoring of natural foci for zoonotic diseases in specially protected areas of the Kyrgyz Republic as well as the allocation of valuable living organisms for the bank of genetic resources.
Genetic studies of the breed qualities of farm animals are necessary to increase the productivity and quality of farm animals (cattle, small cattle, horses) and to obtain new and stable breeds in a shorter time than the classical methods of breeding new breeds of animals. The research is being carried out as part of a joint research project with the South Korean National Institute of Animal Husbandry.
Using grant funds the Institute purchased the MinION Nanopore Sequencer a portable DNA sequencing device developed by Oxford Nanopore Technologies. It works on the basis of nanopore technology which allows you to determine the sequence of nucleotides in DNA by changing the electric current when a molecule passes through a microscopic pore in the device’s membrane. The MinION nanopore sequencer can be used for various purposes such as species identification, disease diagnosis, microbiome analysis, etc.
This research represents the main biological capital for livestock development and is vital to food security and improved nutrition.
The nanopore sequencer is in the final stages of purchase. After installing the device the personnel will be trained in its operation and the institute will begin genetic research to study the breed qualities, primarily of small ruminants.
