A round table was held dedicated to the International Mountain Day and the International Year of Sustainable Mountain Development

On December 12, 2022, a round table dedicated to the International Mountain Day and the International Year of Sustainable Mountain Development was held at the National Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz Republic. The event was organized by the National Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz Republic and the International Institute of Mountains UNPK “IUK”.

The round table completes a series of communication events to implement the initiative of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic S.N. Zhaparov, who spoke at a meeting of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly in Glasgow, calling on the world community to support and ensure the sustainable development of mountainous areas, to make it a priority to overcome poverty in mountainous and developing countries, where climate impact can lead to irreversible and catastrophic consequences. Thus, the initiative of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic laid the foundation for the formation of a global agenda for mobilizing resources to mitigate the climatic and anthropogenic impacts on fragile mountain ecosystems by overcoming poverty in developing mountainous countries.

The purpose of the Roundtable was to draw public attention to the importance of conservation and sustainable development of mountain ecosystems, territories and communities, and to raise awareness of the public and managers about the importance of sustainable mountain development, as well as the conservation and sustainable use of mountain resources in Kyrgyzstan.

The round table was attended by the Chief Scientific Secretary of the National Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz Republic, corresponding member B.M. Khudaibergenova, Chairman of the Department of Chemical-Technological, Biomedical and Agricultural Sciences NAS KR, corresponding member. K.T. Shalpykov, director of institutes of the National Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz Republic, ex-Minister of Education of the Kyrgyz Republic I.S. Boldzhurova, ex-deputy of the Jogorku Kenesh KR A.T. Altybaeva, scientists and representatives of the academic community, independent experts, specialists and employees of the International Institute of Mountains, representatives of non-governmental organizations.

Materials from studies examining mountains and mountain ecosystems, mountain communities and mountain countries in the context of the impact of climate change and increasing anthropogenic pressure on fragile mountain ecosystems were reviewed and discussed. Speakers K.T. Shalpykov, M.K. Razhapbaev, G.S. Dzhunusova, I.S. Boldzhurova, A.T. Altybaeva, M.S. Baikhodzhaev, Alagoz uulu A. in their speeches spoke about the need for a deeper understanding of mountain ecosystems and structural elements, human living conditions in the mountains, topical issues of the socio-economic situation of women and children in the mountainous regions of the Kyrgyz Republic, the importance of public initiatives to improve the status of women and children in the mountainous regions of the country.

At the end of the discussions, the Round Table participants emphasized the need to mobilize all national resources to find innovative technological and environmental solutions, socio-economic tools for the sustainable development of mountain regions, when mountains and mountain resources are used effectively in order to preserve and reproduce mountain ecosystems and improve the condition of mountain communities .

The Round Table participants came to the conclusion that it is necessary to consistently achieve an in-depth understanding of mountain ecos ystems as a fragile and valuable resource for the life support of mankind, the need to mobilize resources for the timely mitigation of the consequences caused by climate change.
